Child actors have always run the risk of being obscured by the characters they play. Instead, Yara Shadidi's activism efforts and influential voice highlight her caliber beyond starring in Emmy nominated show Black-ish and its spin-off series Grown-ish.
Even at such a young age, Yara has worked relentlessly to educate her younger generation on the importance of having their voice heard. She founded “Eighteen x 18”, an effort to increase voter turnout and “Yara’s Club” which is a partnership with Young Women’s Leadership Network (YWLN) providing online mentorship in hopes to end poverty through education.
“It’s more clear than ever that young people have both social and political power in our country, and it’s so important that everyone turning 18 this year engages in the political process.”
Her activism has lead her to great accomplishments. She was noticed by former first lady, Michelle Obama who also wrote her letter of recommendation to Harvard University. I mean, come on. How amazing is that??
We are proud to call this talented, smart and beautiful young woman our #WomanofNote this month!
